Investigation reveals targeting of 25 Kurdish websites, including those affiliated with the Autonomous Administration 

An investigation published by the "sekoia" platform, which specializes in cybersecurity, said that the websites were subjected to a "Waterholing" attack that targeted the websites of the SDF and the Autonomous Administration. 

According to the investigation, the attack relied on targeting 25 websites, hacking them, and planting applications targeting their visitors, asking them for permissions to access the camera and geographical location. 

The investigation explained that the attack began in 2022, and was not technically advanced or distinctive, but it was effective and highly influential, as those behind it are still unknown. 

In the context, technical expert, Dilshad Othman, said in a post on Facebook that "the targeted system relies on limited and specific teams to build and manage its websites, and perhaps the trust factor is the basis for choosing who manages these websites, which makes those teams vulnerable to targeting. In addition, the infected code on a particular website will inevitably be present on other websites due to the unity of technical management." 

 He added that the hack "poses a great danger, given the extent of the damage it causes and its repercussions... and on the other hand, it represents an insult to those who understand the matter from a technical perspective." 

Othman pointed out that "despite the simplicity of the attack, it was very successful, enabling the parties behind it to obtain sensitive information, which may be sufficient to carry out assassinations using drones and other means." 

He noted that what is more dangerous than that is that "the hackers were able to access users' geographic data, and even access their cameras, which means the ability to monitor them constantly."
